3 Tips for Running a Christian Business
As a Christian, you know that God has called you to do great things. You feel it in your bones that you have a purpose! And as a faith-based entrepreneur, you are in a unique position to impact the world for His glory, not yours. You realize that doing business as a Christian can be challenging when the world is screaming at your to compete, hustle and compare. So what does it look like to run a Christian business? How can you ensure that your business is glorifying God?
Here are three tips for running a Christian business:
1. Pray for guidance.
As with all decisions in life, it is important to seek God’s guidance when starting or running a business. This should not be a suggestion but rather a command. Pray for wisdom and clarity as you make decisions large and small. Ask God to help you discern His will for your business. It’s easy to see success defined by the world’s standards and equate it as blessing. We should keep our business on the potter’s wheel to mold, define and refine as needed.
God is also in the details, friend! He’s not unconcerned with healing your body just as He is not with helping you determine what to post on social media. We are salt and light into the world! He left us the Holy Spirit as a helper, with no specific ‘job description’ over what He won’t or will help us with. He is with us in ALL things!
2. Make Him your priority.
Remember that your first priority is to glorify God—not to make money or achieve success. He is more concerned with your heart and character than He is with you “doing” for Him. Ensure that it’s the audience of “One” that you seek. It’s His affirmation, His honor, His worship you’re after. When we make Him a priority, then we operate out of WHO we are and not simply getting our boxes checked. This allows us not to be swayed by criticism OR praise. We can rest in our identity rather than the accolades of others. We can be at peace knowing we did the will of God and not our own. When you keep Him at the center of everything you do, He will bless your efforts and use your business for His purposes.
3. Use your gifts and talents.
God has uniquely gifted and equipped you to do great things. But first, remember that God’s priority is your full freedom and healing. Which means, our identity must be established on the firm foundation of the gospel before we just start “doing” for Him. Yes, use your gifts and talents to further His Kingdom through your business or ministry. Whether it’s developing a new ministry or offering a much-needed service, use your God-given abilities to bless others and make a difference in the world. Bring your skills, passions and talents under the umbrella of Jesus. Let Him show you how to use them in a way that brings Him glory! Just remember that your identity is first and foremost a Child of God. Live and move from that revelation into your God given calling!
When you feel called by God to start a business, know that He will equip you with everything you need to be successful—not just financially, but also spiritually and emotionally as you submit and yield to Him. Trust Him to lead and guide you as you grow your Christian business. And don’t forget to pray! Prayer is essential for any area of our lives, but it is especially vital when making such an important decision like starting a business. So ask God for wisdom and guidance, seek His will for your company, and trust that He will lead you every step of the way.
