3 Ways to Develop a Biblical Money Mindset

Many of us have been taught that money is the root of all evil. We've been told to be mindful of our spending and to live within our means. While there is nothing wrong with being prudent with our finances, what if we took a different approach? What if we looked at money through the lens of scripture?

Here are three ways to develop a biblical money mindset:

1. Recognize that money is a tool, not an end in itself.

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus tells us that we cannot serve both God and money. This is because money is a tool; it is something that we use to accomplish our goals. When we view money as an end in itself, we allow it to take control of our lives and make us slaves to debt and materialism. But when we see it as a tool, we can use it for good, whether that means giving generously to others or investing in a business that will make a difference in our community.

2. Understand that everything belongs to God.

In Psalm 24:1, we are reminded that the earth and everything in it belongs to the Lord. This includes our finances. When we recognize that everything belongs to God, it changes the way we think about money. Instead of thinking of ourselves as the ultimate deciders of how our money should be spent, we defer to God's will for our lives. This doesn't mean that we don't make financial decisions—we still need to be good stewards of what God has given us—but it does mean that we seek his guidance in all areas of our lives, including our finances.

3. Give generously and cheerfully.

In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul tells us that God loves a cheerfulgiver. When we give generously and cheerfully, it demonstrates our trust in God's provision for our lives. It also shows our others the love of Christ through us. When we give out of a motivation other than mere duty or obligation, it blesses not only the recipient but also the giver. So next time you're tempted to hold onto your money out of fear or greed, remember that God has called you to be a generous giver—not just with your finances but with your time, your talents, and your resources as well.

Developing a biblical money mindset is essential for living a life that is pleasing to God. Far too often, we allow money to take control of our lives instead of using it as a tool to accomplish His purposes in our lives. When we understand that everything belongs to Him and that He has called us to be generous givers, it changes the way we prioritize our spending and allows us to live more intentionally. Put these principles into practice today and watch how God begins to raise your financial IQ.
